From shared joys and heartache to love and growth, the ins and outs of our close relationships can shape our health and well-being throughout our lives. It is often simple to see how relationships can affect us emotionally, but loved ones can also influence our physical health and longevity in ways the naked eye may miss. For example, did you know that people with a lot of social support live longer than those with less support and that the effect is stronger than the benefits of exercise? Or, have you heard that a tense disagreement with your partner can slow your metabolism and change your immune system?
As we learn the pathways by which our relationships "get under our skin," one element of our work at Fleurenville is integral - our resident lifestyle and activity participation programme.
In recent years, the concept of elderly-friendly communities has become central to the notion of ageing in place. Fleurenville's elderly-friendly community is a place where "people can live their entire lives" if they so desire, rather than having to relocate. Recognising the need to better refine and focus our attention on the importance of social connectedness as part of our elderly-friendly community is part of our resident lifestyle and activity program and ensures the continuation of social participation.
There is a range of ways we arrange for our residents to join a social group or activity club. Depending on their unique interests, it may be as simple as playing bowls, putt-putt or group walks. For our residents who require more care and support while engaging in activities, Fleurenville created a comfortable and safe place to engage in social events.
We enrich lives through art therapy, access to allied health services, social activities and friendship groups. Our music, dancing and singing therapy program is particularly popular for its health and social benefits. Fleurenville also provides seniors group sessions with allied professionals in the areas of occupational therapy and physiotherapy.
While support networks benefit us in our later years, it is vital to consider the nature of our relationships. It is also imperative to remember that while many people may physically slow down, it doesn't mean they don't have an amazing life left to live.
